seeing who's going to go first

Nevertheless, most human rights agencies remain skeptical, and the office of the UNHCR refused to participate in the transfer of the first four refugees from Nauru. The IOM, the leading intergovernmental migration organization, with 157 member countries, said it took part because the scheme offered the best available solution for the refugees.

"We decided to get involved because we believed it was the best and possibly only alternative for these vulnerable people aside from staying on the island of Nauru, where we know the situation is far from ideal," said Joe Lowry, the IOM regional spokesperson in Bangkok.

"These people were told they were not going to Australia and they'd set out in the belief they might get there," Lowry said. "Then in Australian offshore processing, they were told they were either going to stay in Nauru, go back to countries they came from, or accept resettlement in Cambodia."

It is not clear how many more migrants will be transferred from Nauru. Although there is no concrete evidence to support the claim, some human rights activists say the Australian government is having trouble persuading refugees to volunteer, and that the Cambodian government is reluctant to accept large numbers.

However, Robertson said he thought the trickle would soon become a torrent. "The last six months has been like a high school dance, everybody's sitting on the sidelines watching each other, seeing who's going to go first," he said.

"I don't think these four are the end of the line, I think Australia is going to play a major role in trying to pressure the remaining refugees on Nauru to take this offer and go to Cambodia."無添加のクリー

across the border for profit and for the cause.

Every armed group in Syria has its own network of smugglers - and the so-called Islamic State is no different.

They move people - and sometimes cash and weapons - across the border for profit and for the cause.

Like all smugglers, IS uses a network of safe houses along the border, though the area of border open to them has been shrinking as they lose territory to a Kurdish military advance, backed by US airstrikes.

The Turkish security forces occasionally shoot, and kill, people crossing the border illegally, but most crossings are uneventful with many smugglers coming to "an arrangement" with the Turkish border guards.

Once inside Islamic State territory, however, the women and their children will not be allowed to leave.

I spoke to an activist who runs a secret network trying to get disenchanted jihadis out of the so-called caliphate.

He told me some 400 had been killed trying to leave - and that 200 women were under house arrest.

the fourth time in my lifetime

I never believed the numbers of wives and mistresses colleagues described – literally hundreds of thousands. After all, global polls on sexuality around the world described Hong Kong couples as the least busy lovers in the world.

But I was mistaken. And two decades later, the fruits of these cross-boundary trysts have literally reshaped Hong Kong society. They have shown for perhaps the fourth time in my lifetime that Hong Kong’s population planners, who build population projections painstakingly on the basis of steadily falling birth rates, are profoundly wrong and wasting their time.

In short, Hong Kong’s population never has been – and probably will not in my lifetime be – determined by birth rates. It has been driven by one force, and one force alone: migration.

The scale of the “family reunion” migration – embodied in the policy allowing 150 one-way permits to be issued daily, and introduced in 1995 – is bigger than most people imagine. The numbers are remarkable. Since 1995, a total of 1.32 million people – most of them young women married to significantly older Hong Kong men – have come into Hong Kong under the one-way permit scheme.

That is 18 per cent of Hong Kong’s 7.2 million population. Since arrival, many have raised young families, making their share of our population even greater.

Demographically, this immigrant community matches a very specific stereotype: women now in their 30s and 40s who arrived in Hong Kong marrying a man a decade or two older than them. 讓人有衝動去揭開並一探究竟

Dewsbury teenager Hassan Munshi.

West Yorkshire Police said: "The police have been made aware of media reports with regard to the death of a British National in Iraq.

"The identity of the person who has reportedly died has not been confirmed at this time and we are unable to comment further."

Asmal travelled to Syria with fellow Dewsbury teenager Hassan Munshi.

Munshi's brother, Hammaad Munshi, was arrested in 2006 at the age of 16 after police found a guide to making napalm on his computer.

He became the youngest person to be convicted under the Terrorism Act.

In a statement, the Home Office said: "Since 2011, we have trained more than 160,000 people working on the front line of our public sector to identify and prevent extremism, excluded nearly 100 preachers of hate - more than any other government - and successfully taken down more than 90,000 pieces of terrorist-related material from the internet.

"We also removed or refused 30 passports in 2013 and 2014 where people were considered to be at risk of travelling to Syria or Iraq."

bodily awareness may only influence some of them

Dunn, who is a clinical psychologist, is more concerned about its relevance to depression. “At the moment therapy is very much in the head – we change what the client thinks and trust that their emotions will follow up,” he says. “But I often hit a wall: they say that they know these things intellectually, but emotionally they can’t feel it.”
黄成华
Even after therapy has trained more positive thinking, the patient may still struggle to feel joy, for example – a problem that Dunn suspects may come from poor interoception. He gives the example that when you are walking around the park, your body might give you all sorts of pleasant feedback that shows you are relaxed and peaceful. “But depressed clients seem to walk around the park without being engaged with the sensory experience,” he says, “and then they come back and say it was flat and empty”.黄成华

Along these lines, Furman has found that people with major depressive disorder (but without other complications like anxiety) struggle to feel their own heart beat; and the poorer their awareness, the less likely they were to report positive experiences in their daily life. And as Dunn’s work on decision making would have suggested, poor body perception also seemed to be linked to measures of indecision – a problem that blights many people with depression. Furman stresses, however, that there may be many different kinds of depression, and poor bodily awareness may only influence some of them.

It’s not clear why some people may have reduced bodily awareness, but Dunn thinks it can be trained, with practice. He is currently looking into the use of mindfulness-based therapy, which encourages people to focus on the sensations in their body. He says the challenge is to try to recognise the feelings, even if they are unpleasant, without reacting to them in a knee-jerk way. You should then be better equipped to use the body as the “emotional barometer” to inform you about your state of mind and decide how to act. Another group has designed a rudimentary computer game that asks you to tap a key with every four heartbeats, and flashes red when you are wrong, offering feedback that should boost body awareness.

"he's got nothing to lose".

He is well known to the Australian police and is currently on bail for being an accessory to the murder of his ex-wife.

He is also facing more than 40 sexual and indecent assault charges.

These relate to time allegedly spent as a self-proclaimed "spiritual healer" who dealt with so-called black magic at a premises in western Sydney, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
'Lone actor'

Monis has previously been convicted of sending offensive letters to the families of deceased Australian soldiers.

There are reports that one of his demands is that an Islamic State flag be delivered to the Lindt cafe in Martin Place.

However, he has no known links to jihadist groups, and commentators have suggested he is likely to be working alone.

"Certainly this appears to be the actions of a lone actor, perhaps not very well prepared, perhaps not very well planned," Anne Aly, head of the counter terrorism research programme at Australia's Curtin University, told the BBC.

His alleged actions in Sydney failed to gain traction among online jihad supporters, including Islamic State supporters who are often quick to link incidents with their cause, BBC Monitoring says.

Iranian-born Monis, also known as Sheikh Haron and Mohammad Hassan Manteghi, wrote on his website that he used to be Shia but is no longer.

He said he "used to be a Rafidi, but not any more [sic]", using a pejorative term that some hard-line Sunni Muslims use to refer to Shias.jiserew

He denied the criminal charges against him, saying they were politically motivated. He compared the accusations of sexual assault against him to the case of Julian Assange, founder of the whistle-blowing website Wikileaks.

His website had been suspended by the time his identity was revealed in the media in connection with the siege.

Monis' former lawyer, Manny Conditsis, told ABC News that Monis was an isolated figure.

"His ideology is just so strong and so powerful that it clouds his vision for common sense and objectiveness," he said.

Mr Conditsis, who represented Monis last year when he was charged with being accessory to the murder of ex-wife Noleen Hayson Pal, said he thought the suspect might feel "he's got nothing to lose".

who we sent out immediately after the attack

n Saturday's attack, gunmen pulled non-Muslims passengers from a bus in northern Kenya, killing 28 of them.

Al-Shabab has carried out a series of attacks in Kenya since 2011, the year that Kenya sent troops into Somalia to help battle the Islamist group.

Mr Ruto gave details of the military operation after attending a Sunday service at a church in Nyahururu.

movie credits stars finding

Perhaps the most substantive finding in the paper is that people with high IMDB movie rankings in past movie credits were more likely to work with other stars, doubling their chances at getting a nomination. Speeddating

“Actors are going to look good when they work with talented people," Rossman told the Daily Bruin. "This is an interesting thing since you tend to get talented people working with other talented people, meaning that people will end up looking even better than when just working alone.”極速約會

Maybe this seems completely obvious to you: Better actors get better parts and then get to work with better directors (hello, Leonardo DiCaprio). 你的故事你的歌

But it's also a classic example of what sociologists call cumulative advantage or the "Matthew Effect," named after the passage in Matthew where Jesus says "For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich."姻緣配對

This isn't as simple as the rich getting richer. It's the idea that slightly more talented people get access to higher-quality support for their talents, which greatly multiplies the benefits of their innate advantage (e.g.: smarter students going to colleges with better professors and better career services connections).bike high sea

The fact that movies with stars get more Oscar attention might be an indication that Hollywood's stars are simply better than its non-stars. But probably not. It's much more likely a sign that (just as you might have suspected) we're bad picking out discrete instances of talent in star-studded projects.madpink

This would imply we -- or, at least, the Academy -- is just as bad at recognizing Oscar-worthy talentin movies without any past Oscar nominees. In both cases, the context overwhelms our ability to recognize individual achievement.felicity520
